Burn First Aid - Five Steps: Cool, Remove, Soak, Cover, Seek

Proper first aid treatment for burn accidents can reduce injury severity and minimize subsequent scar formation

  1. Cool - Rinse with Cool Running Water
Rinse the wound with cool running water for 15-30 minutes, water temperature around 15-25°C. If clothing sticks to skin, don't forcibly remove it - cool it down with water first.
  2. Remove - Carefully Remove Clothing
Carefully remove clothing, watches, rings from the injured area while in water to prevent difficulty removing after tissue swelling. If clothing sticks to wound, use scissors to cut it off without tearing.
  3. Soak - Continue Soaking in Cool Water
Continue soaking the injured area in cool water for 10-30 minutes, or until pain relief is felt. Be careful water temperature is not too low to avoid frostbite.
  4. Cover - Cover with Clean Gauze
Gently cover the wound with clean gauze or towel to prevent infection. Avoid using cotton or fibrous materials that may stick to the wound.
  5. Seek - Seek Medical Attention Immediately
Transport the patient to a hospital with burn specialists as soon as possible. Keep wound clean during transport and maintain body temperature.

Important Reminder

Do not use folk remedies like toothpaste, soy sauce, or egg white. These substances may cause infection or impede heat dissipation.

Wound Care Guidance

Proper wound care is key to preventing infection and promoting healing

Daily Care Points

  • Change dressings daily, keep wound clean and dry
  • Gently clean wound with saline solution
  • Apply ointment or dressings as directed by physician
  • Avoid wound contact with unclean materials
  • Monitor for signs of infection

Reminder

If wound shows signs of infection such as redness, pus, or fever, seek medical attention immediately.

Scar Prevention & Care

Early scar prevention can significantly improve post-healing appearance

Prevention Methods

  • Avoid direct sunlight, use sunscreen
  • Use compression garments or silicone sheets
  • Regular massage to keep skin soft
  • Use moisturizing products, prevent skin dryness
  • Continue rehabilitation exercises

Timing is Important

Scar prevention should begin immediately after wound healing and continue for 6-12 months for best results.

Rehabilitation Exercise Guidance

Appropriate rehabilitation exercises help restore joint mobility and prevent contracture formation

Hand Rehabilitation Exercises

  1. Fist Clenching
Slowly make a fist and open, hold for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times
  2. Finger Extension
Spread fingers as wide as possible, hold for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times
  3. Wrist Movement
Bend wrist up and down, side to side, 10 times in each direction

Joint Mobility Exercises

  1. Passive Movement
Assisted joint movement by others to maintain range of motion
  2. Active Movement
Self-directed joint movement to strengthen muscles
  3. Resistance Training
Add appropriate resistance training in later recovery phase

Precautions

Rehabilitation exercises should be progressive. Stop immediately if pain occurs and consult physician. Recovery varies for each individual - follow medical team recommendations.
